Silhouettes are outlines—tracings of shapes but absent of detail. Their very nature invites the viewer to fill in the unknowns. Once seen as a quick, cheap way to cast a person’s profile, the idea of silhouettes have transformed to represent the mysteries we seek to define, the sleek styles we wear, or simply the overwhelming shadows in which we find ourselves traversing.
Examining silhouettes allow for the opportunity to peel back the curtain and see the genius and struggle behind the design. In crafting a silhouette for others to perceive, one must pare themselves down to the essentials: emotion, form, movement. We encourage our audience to analyze the role that the silhouette, the slice, the two-dimensional view, plays in the decisions they make and the experiences they share.
That is the invitation we extend to you--what are the silhouettes that you see in your life and your work?
